My paintings are, at first glance, easy and familiar. I lure you in with comfortable sceneries such as natural landscapes and cityscapes, with human situations so banal that you could very well imagine these characters to be you. As you take in my paintings, a sense of eeriness slowly creeps in. My paintings suddenly feel strange- the characters are too still, the perspectives skewed, the scenes too flat and awkward as if staged, and the colours too vibrant, matte and artificial. You realise my paintings are far from pleasant; instead, they are oddly lukewarm, impersonal, and even critical.
My paintings are my attempts in portraying truth. I am not painting for the beauty in forms; I am painting to share my reflections on our funny human behaviours. Recognising our dissonant desires and needs, I document these complexities and ironies within ourselves.
